Power When It Matters Most

Power outages can happen during storms, accidents, or unexpected equipment damage, making it important to understand your options for keeping your home powered when the lights go out. Backup power solutions provide an added layer of convenience and peace of mind by helping maintain essential functions during an outage.

One of the most common backup power options is a portable generator. These units can be used to power select appliances, such as refrigerators, sump pumps, or small electronics. Portable generators are typically more affordable and flexible, but they require manual setup and should always be operated outdoors in a well-ventilated area.

For a more seamless solution, standby generators are permanently installed outside the home and automatically turn on when an outage is detected. These systems are connected directly to your home’s electrical panel and can power larger portions of your home, depending on the size of the unit. Because they operate automatically, standby generators provide a reliable way to maintain comfort and convenience during an outage.

Another important consideration is how backup power is safely connected to your home. Transfer switches are used to safely move power between your home and the generator, preventing electricity from flowing back onto utility lines. Because of the critical safety role they play, transfer switches should always be installed by a qualified electrician. This protection is essential for the safety of lineworkers and others working to restore power.

While backup power can be a valuable addition, it is also important to think about your household’s priorities during an outage. Identifying which appliances and systems are most important—such as medical equipment, heating and cooling, or refrigeration—can help determine the right solution for your needs.

At Southeastern Indiana REMC, we are committed to helping members stay informed and prepared. Understanding your backup power options allows you to make decisions that support your home’s comfort, safety, and energy needs throughout the year.
