BUILD A STORM EMERGENCY KIT

family building a storm emergency kit

Spring and early summer storms in Southeastern Indiana can bring heavy rain, strong winds, and potential power outages. While no one enjoys losing power, being prepared ahead of time can make those moments easier to manage.

Restoration times can vary, but SEI REMC crews are always working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. Having a storm emergency kit ready can help keep your household safe and comfortable while you wait.

Creating a storm emergency kit is a simple do-it-yourself project that ensures you have the essentials on hand when you need them most.

What You’ll Need

  • Flashlight (one per household member)

  • Extra batteries

  • Portable phone charger or power bank

  • Bottled water

  • Non-perishable snacks

  • First aid kit

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank weather radio

  • Blanket or extra clothing

  • Waterproof container or storage bin

Step 1: Choose a Storage Location

Select a location in your home that is easy to access during an outage, such as a hallway closet, kitchen cabinet, or designated emergency area.

Step 2: Gather Essential Supplies

Collect items that will help your household stay safe and comfortable during a power outage. Focus on lighting, communication, and basic needs.

Step 3: Check and Replace Items

Make sure batteries are fresh, devices are working, and food or water supplies are not expired. Updating your kit regularly helps ensure everything is ready when needed.

Step 4: Keep It Easy to Access

Store your kit in a clearly labeled container so it can be quickly found during severe weather or low-light conditions.

Step 5: Review with Your Household

Make sure everyone in your home knows where the kit is located and how to use the items inside.

At Southeastern Indiana REMC, we care about the safety and comfort of our members during outages. A simple emergency kit can help you stay safe and prepared when the unexpected happens.

A Quick Safety Reminder
During a power outage, use flashlights instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.

If you use a generator, always operate it outdoors and away from windows and doors to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.

Report outages through SmartHub, by phone, or by text so SEI REMC crews can respond quickly and safely.
