Co-op Kids Club
Investing in the future leaders of our communities, Co-op Kids Club is a monthly, in-person gathering for students in grades 1–6 that combines hands-on activities with fun, engaging lessons about energy and our cooperative.

LIGHTING THE WAY:
How Fiber Internet Works
Curious how your favorite shows stream so quickly or how video calls happen in real time? At our next Co-op Kids Club meeting, kids will discover how fiber internet uses light to deliver fast, reliable connections right to your home.
Designed for students in grades 1–6, Co-op Kids Club brings learning to life through hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and fun, engaging topics that connect everyday life to electricity and technology.
At our May 7 meeting, kids will explore:
-
What fiber optic cable is
-
How light carries information
-
Why fiber internet is faster than traditional connections
Through simple, visual demonstrations—like using light to send signals—kids will see firsthand how technology keeps our homes connected.
We’ve already had a great start to the year. At our April meeting, kids had a blast learning how electricity travels from power plants to their homes, and many left with a new understanding of how the grid works and the role SEI REMC plays in powering our communities.
Each Co-op Kids Club session is designed to spark curiosity, encourage questions, and help kids better understand the world around them—all in a fun and welcoming environment.

Try this at home
Send a Message with Light!
Want to see how fiber internet uses light to send information? Try this simple activity at home:
What You’ll Need:
-
Flashlight
-
Mirror (or something shiny)
-
A partner
What to Do:
-
Stand across the room from your partner.
-
Shine the flashlight toward the mirror.
-
Tilt the mirror to reflect the light toward your partner.
-
Try turning the light on and off in patterns (like short and long flashes).
-
Have your partner guess the pattern or message!
What You Learned:
Just like your flashlight sends light across the room, fiber internet sends information using light through special cables—only much faster!
