When the helicopter comes into view above a Southeastern Indiana REMC right-of-way, it is hard not to stop and watch. The rotors cut across the summer sky. The aircraft settles into a steady hover over the trees. Below it, a large aerial saw moves with purpose through limbs that have grown too close to the power lines. For some members, it is an impressive sight. Cars pull over. Phones come out. Neighbors watch from porches and fields.

Southeastern Indiana REMC recently awarded $75,800 in Operation RoundUp grants to 35 local organizations supporting food assistance, education, youth programs, public safety, emergency services, healthcare and other community needs.

As harvest season gets underway across southeastern Indiana, farmers and farm crews are putting in long hours moving equipment between fields, traveling rural roads and working to bring in the crop. With that increased activity comes an important reminder: always look up and stay alert around power lines.

We often talk about being prepared for severe storms, extended power outages and other emergencies. We stock flash-lights and batteries, keep emergency supplies on hand and make sure our homes are ready for changing seasons. But there’s another type of prepared-ness that deserves just as much attention: financial preparedness.
